Australian Downhill Champion Troy Brosnan has claimed 3rd place in the 2016 UCI Mountain Bike World Cup following the final round of the series in Vallnord, Andorra over the weekend.

Vallnord is the northern-most valley of Andorra, and was the host of the final round of the World Cup.

THE MOUNTAINS ARE BIG AND THE TRACK IS ONE OF THE RIDERS FAVOURITES ON THE CIRCUIT, STEEP, LOOSE AND FAST.

The Specialized Racer showed promise on the first day of practice as the fastest rider down the mountain.

THE FIRST DAY OF PRACTICE THE TRACK HAD NOT SEEN RAIN FOR SO LONG, THE MOST DUSTY, BLOWN OUT TRACK EVER! I HAD A GREAT DAY CLOCKING THE FASTEST TIME IN TIMED TRAINING.

Brosnan found his rhythm on the steep flowing track to grab 1st in Qualifying, an accolade he has been searching for since the Cairns World Cup.

QUALIFYING DAY AND THE TRACK GOT EVEN WORSE AND MADE IT JUST LIKE CONDITIONS BACK HOME IN AUSTRALIA. I HAD A PRETTY GOOD RUN FOR QUALIFYING AND WAS ABLE TO PUT MYSELF IN THE 1ST PLACE, SO I WAS LOOKING FORWARD TO RACE DAY!

Brosnan struggled in practice, but was looking forward to putting it all on the line in his race run.

RACE DAY SHOWED NO SIGN OF RAIN IN THE MORNINGS PRACTICE, I DIDN’T HAVE THE BEST OF PRACTICE RUNS IN THE MORNING BUT NOT ALL OF MY RUNS CAN BE PERFECT.

The day began with top conditions, but the rain poured down just before Brosnan was due for his run.

RACE RUN WAS COMING UP AND I STARTED WARMING UP ON THE INDOOR TRAINER, NEXT MINUTE IT STARTED RAINING SUPER HARD. ALMOST HAIL AND DIDN’T SEEM LIKE IT WAS GOING TO EASE UP! WITH ALMOST THE WHOLE FIELD ALREADY GONE DOWN BEFORE THE DOWNPOUR OF RAIN IT WAS GOING TO BE A SUPER HARD TASK TO EVEN MAKE IT DOWN THE TRACK IN ONE PIECE LET ALONE GETTING ON THE PODIUM!”

Brosnan had to battle the elements in his race run, crashing out on one of the corners and racing to recover lost time.

I SET OFF OUT OF THE GATE NOT KNOWING HOW SLIPPERY THE TRACK WAS GOING TO BE AND IT WAS VERY, VERY WET! I ALMOST CRASHED SO MANY TIMES PUSHING IT TO THE LIMIT, THEN I ACTUALLY CRASHED IN ONE OF THE CORNERS LOWER IN MY RACE RUN. I GOT BACK UP AS QUICK AS I COULD AND MANAGED TO FINISH 20TH ON THE DAY. KNOWING THAT IF IT WAS DRY FOR EVERYONE IT COULD HAVE BEEN A VERY DIFFERENT STORY.

The Australian finished with a time of 4:24.602, +10.991 behind the leader which put him in 20th for the round.

Brosnan’s stellar performances in the previous rounds meant that he still had a place on the podium overall and finished 3rd in the 2016 UCI Mountain Bike World Cup

WITH WORLD CUP FINALS OVER I MANAGED TO HOLD ONTO 3RD OVERALL AND NOW HAVE EVEN MORE CONFIDENCE COMING INTO WORLD CHAMPIONSHIPS NEXT WEEKEND IN ITALY!

Brosnan’s focus now moves to the UCI Mountain Bike World Championships, to be held in Val Di Sole, Italy on the 6-11 of September.
